Stanford Rowing gears up for Big Row this weekend as both the Men’s and Women’s Teams prepare to meet Cal. The Rowing Association will have a tent under the bridge on Saturday, May 4th. All supporters of Stanford Rowing are encouraged and welcome to stop by! Please arrive before 9am to enjoy coffee and bagels. The Senior Day celebration will be held following the races. Please be advised that there is a chance for rain!

RESULTS
For the 2024 Big Row we had one of our largest alumni turnouts! We also had the privilege of hosting Senior Day for the athletes. For those of you who were there or watched the livestream, the weather was unusually rough for sunny California, with fairly heavy rain and wind gusts, particularly across the lagoon. The livestream camera drone also wasn’t in service due to the weather. But, for anyone who has rowed before, we know this doesn’t stop races or practices like it might for other sports!
Coming into this race, on the Women’s side, #4 Cal had come off wins against #7 UW and #2 Stanford with a narrow loss against #1 Texas. On the Men’s side, #4 Cal had lost for the first time in 3 years to #2 UW, and #12 Stanford had victories against #22 Oregon State.
Sometimes bouncing back from a loss helps sharpen the focus, and it definitely showed for the Stanford Women, who swept Cal in all 5 races. See the race results here and the GoStanford write up here. Despite the conditions, the margins of victory were very solid. The latest CMAX 1V8+ rankings here show Princeton and Tennessee as other strong contenders aside from Texas, and the rankOAR team rankings now have Tennessee predicted at #2. So, we know the fight to medal at the NCAA podium this year will be as strong as ever. For Big Row, we’ll savor the win but also know the coaches will be working on a lot of things for the next couple of weeks.
On the Men’s side, beating the defending national champions after their first loss wasn’t going to be easy. And, as for the entire season, the Stanford 1V8+ was composed again of mostly freshmen (four), including a stroke who was previously in the 2V8+. Read the GoStanford writeup here. There is definitely still a lot of learning and experimentation going on with the youth of the team in mind, and we’re excited to see what happens at the final PAC-12s on Lake Natoma on May 19th en route to IRAs.

WOMEN
The No. 2 Stanford Women earned a decisive overall victory against No. 4 Cal in the Big Row, winning every race in the annual rivalry.
Competing in a consistent rain on the Peninsula bayshore, Stanford won all five races by at least seven seconds, to complete the regular season and provided an exclamation point in the final home regatta of Stanford's seniors, who were recognized afterward on Senior Day.
The defending NCAA champion Cardinal earned a crowning victory in the first varsity eight race. With junior Luise Bachmann at stroke and senior Belle Battistoni at bow, Stanford covered the 2,000-meter Belmont Channel/Redwood Shores Lagoon course in 6:26.6, against a headwind, with Cal in 6:33.7.
The wind was mostly between 9-12 knots, with gusts up to 17 knots. The rain never let up. It didn't matter to the Cardinal, which won by eight seconds in 2V8, 15 in 1V4, nine in 3V8, and 10 in 4V8.

MEN
In the annual renewal of a rivalry that began 120 years ago, the Stanford men's rowing team dropped a pair of races to Cal in the Big Row.
On a dreary rainy day along the Peninsula bayshore, Stanford and Cal raced each other in two varsity eight boats, with Cal earning victories in each on the Belmont Channel/Redwood Shores Lagoon course.
In the 1V8 matchup, the No. 4 Golden Bears clocked 5:50.9 to No. 12 Stanford's 6:07.2. The 2V8 matchup had a seven-second difference, 6:03.3 to Stanford's 6:10.4.
The teams rowed against a headwind and rain coming in hard on 9-12-knot winds with gusts of 17 knots.
Wilder Fulford, a sophomore from London, made his debut at stroke for the Cardinal IV8, moving up from that same seat on the 2V8. Caspar Griffin was in the bow. Overall, Stanford's 1V8 boat included four freshmen (including coxswain Kannon Alford), three sophomores, and two seniors.
Overall this season, against one of the toughest schedules in the country, the 1V8 and 2V8 boats are each 3-9.
Eight seniors were honored at the Arrillaga Family Rowing and Sailing Center. Stanford's seniors are Kyle Bergstedt, Ben Felter, Joseph Guman, Jacopo Mascitelli, Joey O'Brien, Travis Senf, Tibor Thompson, and Nick Woehrle.
